New and Upcoming Train Routes In North America
Train travel in North America is experiencing a revival, with several new and upcoming routes that are set to offer exciting travel opportunities. Whether you're a fan of scenic journeys, luxury travel, or simply looking for a convenient way to explore different cities, these train routes are definitely worth considering.
1. Upcoming Overnight LA to SF Route
One of the most iconic train routes in America is the journey from Los Angeles to San Francisco. The route is being transformed this year, by Dreamstar’s overnight train service which intends to be a transport-hotel hybrid. The overnight train would leave at about 10 p.m. and arrive at around 8:30 a.m., it will have one-person roomette's with a seat-to-bed conversion starting at around $300. A double bedroom with upper + lower berths for around $600 and first-class suites with rooms starting at or around $1000. The ultra swanky train will have a lounge serving small plates, desserts, and drinks. Dreamstar is using restored cars from the “golden age of American passenger travel” they've outfitted the cars with plenty of art deco style to transport travelers back to the very heyday of train travel. The company will have electronic ticket sales and an app. Dreamstar hopes to start service in summer 2025, with the potential to expand to other U.S. routes. As you travel by night from LA to SF, you'll pass through charming towns receiving a luxurious yet possibly more eco friendly transport and wake well rested to the beauty of the Golden State.
2. Connecting Mexico: Tren Maya or Maya Train
If you're looking for a unique train experience, the Tren Maya or otherwise called the Maya Train is a must-try. This route connects Mexico's popular tourist destination, Cancun, with other major cities in the country. Imagine exploring the beautiful landscapes of Mexico while enjoying the comfort and convenience of train travel. The route loops through five states, that contain many of Mexico’s archaeological treasures – not just from the Mayans, but also from civilisations that preceded them, such as the Olmec. When complete, the railway will feature 34 stations or stops with 42 trains in these five southeastern states: Campeche, Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Chiapas and Tabasco. The train will transport visitors along both coasts and inland, which has been less accessible than the more over developed beach resorts and urban areas. With more than 947 miles of track, the Maya Train is claiming to surpass the distance of Great Britain from top to bottom. The Tren Maya or Maya Train is just one part of a plan to transform the south-east of Mexico, along with a new airport in Tulum, the area is about to be booming with new tourism. Tickets are sold through e-Ticket, which can be accessed through Tren Maya’s website. With two phases of the train route complete, tickets sold, yet two still incomplete, the train remains shrouded in mystery as to it's final completion.
