Important Information Regarding The New Fee For US Citizens Traveling To Europe
US citizens will soon be required to pay a fee to enter Europe. This new requirement has implications for travelers and it's important to understand the details to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey. Here's the necessary information regarding this fee and its implications:
What is the fee?
The fee that US citizens will need to pay to enter Europe is known as the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). The ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization that will be required for non-European Union travelers visiting the Schengen Area.
When does it come into effect?
The exact date when US citizens will need to start paying the ETIAS fee is yet to be determined. However, it is expected to be implemented in the near future, starting mid-2025. It's advisable to stay updated with the latest information from official sources such as the European Commission or the US Department of State.
How much will it cost?
The fee for the ETIAS is expected to be €7 (about $7.60) per application. The application process will be online or in app and can be completed in a matter of minutes. It is important to note that this fee is per application. Therefore, if you're traveling with family or a group, each individual will need to submit a separate application and pay the fee. Travelers who are under 18 years old or older than 70 still need to apply for the authorization but will be exempt from paying. Generally approval will take just a few minutes and once approved it's valid for up to three years or until the passport expires whichever comes first. It's good to note, if you get a new passport, during the three years, you will need to apply for a new ETIAS travel authorisation. Also, make sure your passport is valid for three months after your intended departure or you will be refused entry.
Why is it being implemented?
The implementation of the ETIAS is part of the European Union's efforts to enhance security and strengthen its borders. It will allow authorities to screen travelers before their arrival and identify any potential security risks. By implementing this system, Europe aims to ensure the safety and well-being of both its citizens and visitors.
What do you need to do?
If you are a US citizen planning to visit Europe, it's important to be prepared for the upcoming ETIAS requirement. Once the system is implemented, you will need to complete the online application and pay the fee before your trip. It's recommended to apply well in advance to avoid any last-minute complications or delays. Once you have received a valid ETIAS travel authorisation (required to citizens pictured in green on map), you can enter the territory of the European countries, (pictured above in blue), as often as you want for short-term stays - normally for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
As US citizens prepare to travel to Europe, it's essential to be aware of the new ETIAS fee that will be required for entry. By staying informed, checking for updates from official sources and planning accordingly you can make the most of your trip. Completing the necessary steps in advance, travelers can ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey to Europe.
